Ah, then the terminology is weird! Mastering for iTunes is not the same as creating an MP3/AAC whatever explicitly after the mastering process.

Thanks for that

I've been very happy with the Seinheiser HD280 pro so far ( around 150$ )

They're going for the brand-as-product thing. Most people don't talk about "mp3 players", they talk about iPods, even if it's not an Apple device. Similarly, they want you to think "iTunes" instead of "listening to music".

I own several sets of headphones, AKG's, Sennheiser's, Sony's, Klipsch, etc

The AKG K240 are FAR AND AWAY the best, and most "natural" sounding headphones I have EVER heard. They are also the lightest and most comfortable cans you can wear. They don't pinch your head and you can wear them for hours. I HIGHLY recommend them!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's an interesting article on the subject. Make sure to read the "update" at the bottom.

The author of that article doesn't seem to have a very good grasp of what bit depth actually is.

I'd give the AKG 701/702's a try. They have a very natural sounding bass, not over exaggerated. If you need a little more bass I would look into the AKG 701 Quincy Jones edition. Another good set that I would look into are the Sennheiser HD650.

I went in to Sweetwater recently and tried out every pair they had that was under $100.

Shure somethings (don't remember the model, but it's the one that retails for $96)
Extreme isolation ex-25 and ex-29
Akg (the gold ones with the detachable cable)
And the Sennheiser HD280's.

I settled on the 280's, and I compared them for playing a bass through a headphone amp and recording interface to get the best home practice headphones I could. The shure's were a close second, but the Senn's blew me away! They're VERY comfortable, and had the best sound for my application from the 5 I tried.
