Complete noob here: how to record my bass from the amp ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I have a Gallien Krueger 400 RB (an old one, not the new ones) and I want to record my bass using it. My band has THIS mixer: http://www.behringer.com/EN/images/l...pFront_XXL.jpg

I believe my amp has a Direct Out. We tried using it last rehearsal, but we never got any sound, even when my amp was at volume. I plugged it in the 1/4" input labelled MIC-Bal or unbal. Was this okay ? Obviously not since it didn't work, but why ? I really don't to buy a DI since I wouldn't know where to start and I have no money. Miking the cab is not an option since we do not have any spares (all are used on the drums )

I also have a couple of others questions:
1) I have an active bass (Ibanez). Can this bass be plugged directly into the mixer ?
2) I've read that the Effect Loop SEND jack can also be used but I read about plugging it only halfway and it seemed complicated. How would I go about this ?

Thanks

Just wanted to add that the Direct Out worked when I plugged my headphones directly in it.

Are you guys recording all at the same time?
If you're not, I don't see how taking one of the drum mics will be a problem?

As for going directly into the mixer, I don't think it would be a problem..
Let's wait for the Gurus..

We do are recording all at the same time and we want to use headphones for all the instruments in order to reduce the volume levels, so taking a mic off the drums is an issue. Plus, they are the drummer's mics, so he would probably tell me to get my own.

I assume your G-K has an XLR direct out, and you should use an XLR microphone cable running from that into a balanced XLR input on the mixer. It should work fine, and you don't even need to have a speaker connected to your amp. You can use it just as a DI, to avoid bleeding into the drum mics.

I have the same amp as OP and let's just say that XLR connectors on consumer amps weren't all the rage in 1982.

Well, if it doesn't have an XLR out, the amp's line out into the mixer should still work. It just might have more noise than you'd get with a balanced XLR cable. Your cable might be the issue, or it could just be how you set the controls on the mixer.

1) you should be able to use XLR's on the GK - if not, ext speaker outs could work although you might have to eq the b'jesus out of it to get line noise reduced.
2) I have an active Specter Legend and I've never had a problem going right to the board
3)I haven't a clue how to use the "effects loop"
