DAW Questions? Anyone with a remote console?

Hi,

Hi Tech questions here!!

Is anyone using a remote console to record with? For example, having your big, noisy PC in another room and having your recording space somewhere else. I know that companies make KVM Extenders to extend your keyboard, video and mouse. Some companies are also making USB and audio extenders now.

I know that some of these KVM extenders are expensive. Does anyone use a laptop that is networked to their main recording PC?

I often track in a separate room from my DAW (noisy POS). When recording other people I obviously record at the DAW and watch through the glass. When I record myself, I use a Frontier Design Tranzport. It's a DAW wireless remote that can send signal through walls. It's not terribly full of features, but it's not terribly expensive either ($199), and it's got plenty of useablility to track with. I still have to walk back to the DAW on a regular basis, but MUCH less than I used to. It certainly beats any other alternative I have tried thus far, so I recomend it pretty highly.

Good luck!

For a cheap (free) solution if you have a laptop even a cheapish one you can setup VNC on both PC's, there might be a little video lag but if all you plan on doing is using it to hit record, stop playback etc etc then it should be fine. I use my macbook to record, no noise at all ;-p

Are you using the Macbook for audio input to your main PC? Is your ethernet a hardwire connection? This sounds like a good idea.

Do you need to have the daw software installed on your macbook?

Thanks!!
