Simple Simon here...
I'm recording my bass here @ home. The gear i have is an

Active 5 string bass
Sansamp PBDI
Motu 8 channel preamp- firewire to laptop

My question is how i can get the best tone with this stuff
#1 send Sansamp tone to pre?
#2 send bass tone into uncoloured (off) sansamp?
#3 plug bass direct into pre (it has 1/4 inputs) w/o using sansamp?

so far #1 has deemed the best results but i fear a 'fake' tone, yes, i have done some tweaking with the knobs....

Also, should active basses be set flat or can u boost? When i tried using flat bass with the sansamp w/o any colouring the tone sounded pretty weak...

When you say MOTU 8-channel preamp, I assume you're talking about the MOTU 8Pre. If so, it has pretty good pres, IMO. If you the MOTU and the Sansamp are both sounding thin to you, have you tried using 2 tracks, and blending both signals? Have you looked into plug-ins like the Ampeg SVX? I think that's the correct title. A lot of people have been swearing by that lately both here and on some recording forums I visit.
