Digital recording question (Multiple Inputs in a Soundcard)

I didn't know how to do a search on this so sorry if this is a repeat.

When recording digitally, I usually layer everything and record everything seperate. Build from the drums/bass up, which is fine for solo stuff, but I use cool edit pro and I was wondering, is it possible with a standard soundcard to record multiple inputs and have them create seperate tracks? I doubt it, but it's worth asking I suppose.

If not, how much does a decent multiple input soundcard that will do this cost? I'm a complete amature at this.

You'd need a card with multiple inputs. The biggest internal soundcards I've seen have 6 or 8 inputs but you can get external ones with however many you want. In cool edit pro you'd just set each track to have a different input.

As far as price goes I don't really know, certainly no less than $150 or so unless I've really missed somethin!

How many Inputs do you need? How much money do you have?

M-audio Delta 66: 4 Ins 4 Outs, S/PDIF I/O as well. $300.00

M-audio Delta 1010: 8 Ins 8 Outs, S/PDIF, MIDI and Word Clock I/O. $600.00

MOTU makes a wide variety of Interfaces ranging from $800 to $1500 or so.

Digidesign makes stuff that way damn exspensive, thousands of dollars.

Check out the new e mu stuff (threads here in recording gear) , MANY in and outs, no need for a mixer, extremely good A/D converters, different models for different prices.

I've just started using this one with good results using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDODUO
I toyed with getting this one http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOQUATTRO For $150 I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I too, eagerly await the ability to rid myself of sub par preamps.
