You could use notation software like Finale or Sibelius then export the midi file. But even those programs have they own ideas of how they map sounds. They do give you the option of remapping and defining everything. Personally I find I can do more and quicker with sequencer interface drums. Easy to click in a beat then tweak and humanize.

Ok, I just tried Sibelius and that's EXACTLY what I want... but not at that price. Is there anything that does what Sibelius does, but just with drums? Or just 1/4 of the price?

Could be, but I don't know of any. There is cheaper notation products or versions, but some don't have drums.

Are you by any chance a student? Sibelius is only around 250 for students. I got mine from academicsuperstore.com
