F/Wire recording has low levels in DAW

I am using an Alessis io/14 Firewire Box to try and record Bass and Drum machine directly into Adobe Audition.

The input patches etc are sorted but....

The sound records in as a wavform that looks fine against the dB scale but plays back very muted and low level. If I import another know reference audio file as a test into the same timeline track without adjustment, they playback as expected.

1.Headphone monitoring at the Alessis is fine.
2. Monitoring levels on the dB meters and the Direct monitor look fine.
3. Level monitoring at Audition looks fine

Its a playback issue of the wav it seems!

I saw in another thread that someone else had issues similar with another brand F/W device. Unresolved.

Just curious, how did you solve your problem? I have heard this from other alesis owners.

The problem could be that you might need a mic preamp in order to boost the sound to an acceptable level. Most firewire and USB audio units are +4db or -10db Line level. Microphones, guitars and basses output fall short of the levels needed for those devices. If you get a mixer like a Behringer something else that has mic inputs and line outputs you should be fine.

My problem was that the Device was not selected as the 'Prefered Record' Device although it was selected in Audition on the Record input. The Soundcard seemed to be getting a signal but it had no amplitude. (Not sure why the wave forms appeared to be right. )

The Alesis io 14Firewire does have balanced input/outputs as well as Mic /Line preamp switches It includes two special switched inputs for Bass /Guitars.
