Garage Band tips and gear suggestions needed

Hey all, Happy New Year!

My birthday was a few days ago, and since Santa came for the kids so strong this year, Texas{Dad}greg had to wait a few days until his Birthday until he got his...wait for it...first MacBook. Thank goodness my bday is right after Christmas.

Mine is the entry level $999 model, but for now that will be more than what I need. I'll add some more memory next pay check, as well as a few other goodies like maybe logic.

But for now, I have 3.5 FULL days to play with my macbook and GB, now that the New Year's celebration is over. Here's what I have listed below.

What I want to do is get some tips from ya'll for recording live instruments into GB.

Here's what I have:

-macbook
-audio input interface for mac (plug into audio in of mac and plug guitar/audio source into interface)
-MAudio 4x4 interface and ableton 6 (I think) software
-several guitar and bass amps, as well as a pod, that have either recording, headphone or external outs to use as inputs/pre-amps running my guitar and bass signal through.
-Extensive collection of edrums including the heart of the kit, some roland vdrums. I have a simmons midi module, as well as an emu procussion head I trigger through midi. I have a small mixing board to join all of those signals and levels.
-Midiverb-this is about the only outboard effects unit I have. Thank goodness for plugins and modeling amps.

I don't plan to hook up the maudio just yet, running through the audio input for simplicity. But who knows, for me at 50, I might just throw all caution to the wind and go for it.

I've done a limited amount of pro-tools recording in the past, as well as using cassette four tracks and the dedicated digital 4 tracks from tascam and fostex. So I have some limited experience with recording. Also, I've been recording my live gigs on DAT since I bought my first recorder in 1992, so I have quite a library of past tunes to download to my computer or itunes. Although my wife and one kid have had ipods for a few years, I'm just getting into that too.

I plan to get some more stuff in the near future. A small desktop mixing board for inputs (i.e. mixing several different outputs from my roland vdrums and some older electronic drum modules) and keyboards using multiple sound sources.

Plug in's are for sure in my future, as well as a small set of monitors. I'd surely appreciate any tips on using GB, as well as recommendations for some cheap plug in's and a small set of powered monitors for the Mac.

My tip: get a cable that runs from the headphone jack to the input on a bass amp. Bass amps tend to be better than the speakers on a macbook.

Also, i run directly into the input on the macbook when recording solo bass.
