Which Headphones

Which headphones you guys use when you play through your mixer/computer or recording?

I'm looking for some new ones! I don't want headphones that rests on your ears.

Do you mean that you want headphones that go around your ears, or in your ears?

I use a pair of AKG 240DFs, but they never really sounded right until I dropped $40 on a headphone amplifier. They are 600 Ohm/side and most headphone amps won't push them well enough. There is a guy on evilBay = "biosciencegeek" and he makes really nice mint-tin ChuMoy amps and will customize them for the high-Z cans. That's the best investment I have recently made for monitoring or general listening.

You could also get the regular AKG 240's which are lo-Z and much easier to drive.

There are 3 AKG's
K240 studio, K240M and K240DF.

Which one is best for bass?

The lower impedence AKG set is the K240 Studios. The K240M and K240DF are higher impedence and benefit from extra amplification.

I have a set of K240S (Studio), and they are nice, comfy, good sounding phones. They don't have the best isolation though, lots of sound leakage if you're in a high volume situation with other instruments playing in the same room. I needed some phones with better isolation and got a pair of the Sennheiser HD280 Pros, and I really like them.

I have a set of the AKG K240 headphones which are getting close to 20 years old. Between listening to the audio system and connecting to bass/guitar amps (with headphone outputs), they have been used heavily and still sound great. When my set breaks, I will not hesitate to buy another.

I just recently purchased a pair of Ultrasone HFI-550 and they are wonderful for bass. They are closed back and I believe 64 Ohm, so they shouldn't be too hard to drive. Very punchy and present headphones. Plus they are made in Germany, so you may be able to find a better deal in Europe than I was able to find here in the states.

Has anyone tried the "active" noise cancelling type of headphones. I believe you need a battery to use them, perhaps a AAA.

Good, bad, pros and cons please if you have any?

every time I have tried them they make my ear drums feel weird kind of like you are under water or something. Plus i could still hear noise. I am more interested in the head phones that are like shooting range style the kind that block out almost all the noise. i thing a few companys are making them now. has anybody tried love/hate?

I agree, I'd be more interested in these. The noise cancelling would make me think that I'm not getting an acurate reproduction of what I am listening to (or so I suspect).

we usually use a pair of sennheiser headphones at the studio, and those are by far the best headphones i've ever used but,. Yesterday i was shopping for things to do some pc recording at home and i was on a budget, I picked up a pair of "audio technica" ATH-M2X headphones for 25 bucks, I'm really impressed with the sound of these things for 25 bucks... the best thing about em is they are VERY comfortable and have excellent dampening qualities. Just thought i would let you guys know. Peace

I luvs me AKG K240S. The Senns are also good, as well as the Sony MDR 7506 (which seem to be the most widely used at this pricepoint).
