Help me plan some budget recordings

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I was planning on doing some budget recordins some time, but I was wondering if you guys could help me plan it. I want to record the band playing at the same time as we don't have time to do seperate tracks.

Band is:
1 Drummer
2 Guitarists
1 Bassist

This is what we have:
Marshall MG30
Marshall G50cd
Peavey TNT 115
Sansamp BDDI
Line 6 Toneport Ux1
A good computer
maybe a 1990's 12 track mixer
Audacity
Ableton lite line 6 edition

I was wondering, should I set it up so I have 2 microphones going into the mixer as well as the Sansamp (to retain the bass) and then run the output of the old mixer into the toneport into a single track in Audacity.

Also could anyone recommend me two good quality mics for less than £35 if possible lo (willing to look used).

Also are there any advantages of using 2 mics over 1?

Thanks

Callum

Wow, yeah, that's loooow budget, but not impossible!

Mics, I'd have a look at something like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAMSON-C02-Pai...QQcmdZViewItem

Better than that for 35 quid a pcs. you probably wont find.

No such thing. I'm sure there are some sort of funky oddities out there that might be useful as an effect, but not real microphones.

In general the cost of a mic pretty well parallels that of a bass guitar. If you know exactly what you are doing and the rest of the chain is of good quality there are a handful of usable options as low as 100 bucks or so, typical known workhorse mics start around 500, typical real deal pro stuff starts around a 1000 and prices just escalate from there.

Could you find 2 good quality guitars for less than £35?

Sun Studios uses SM57s to mic drums (except kick). You don't NEED expensive mics, but they sure do make the job easier

Well if you just want to get the sound of the room....Back in the day we use to get boundry mics from radio shack. I think they are 60 bucks or so, they take a battery so it's a powered mic. we put one on the floor threw a thin cloth over it there was all of our bass sound. And hung another one in the middle of the room. Or you just track each instrument one at a time to one track on Audacity. Do the drums first then bass, guitar etc.
