so my friend went and found this used compressor mic for like $40. he told me muciansfriend.com has it for $60, but i don't know what it is called. anyway, i was pretty scheptical about it's ability to even sound as good as our sm58 (we use for vocals), but man was i wrong.
this cheapo mic sounded so good, and was so hot, we were picking up noise in other rooms of the auditorium we reocorded in! not only that, but we also did a light jazz drum track for a project christmas album, and we snare,hat,cymbal,bassdrum all from just booming the mic.... in one take.... on one track!

anyway, i'm happy now.

Probably a MXL 990 Cardioid Condenser Mic.

yup, thats the one.

i found all the specs at musicansfriend too, but i don't know what any of it means, therfor i have no idea how well it stacks up to other mics, being that this is the first condenser mic i've ever used.

It's a Chinese microphone with capsules are
supposed to be copies of the $2,350 Neumann U87,
considered to be a one of the all time reference condensers
of all time -
"The standard of the recording industry since 1967."
A/B-ed against U87s, the MXL's do not have the fullness of the Neumanns (among other things),
but considering the price vs. sound quality - they are highly recommended.
