So I want to do some recording at home using my iMac and GarageBand... Just for fun.

What I was wondering is how to be able to do direct recording into the computer? I bought a cheap little converter that allows me to connect my bass into the mic input in my Mac but no sound can be recorded. Is this because I'm not using a pre-amp or something?

I don't have any experience at all in this area so be nice . Also, I tried connecting my bass to an amp head then connecting the head to the computer, no luck...

oh also if your going from a 1/4'' to 1/8'' piece directly into your computer, with no onboard preamp your going to need one. otherwise your tone will suffer greatly. if your amp has a preamp out jack id try that.

I don't have a MAC - but I have always been able to go direct and just adjust the sound with the audio controls on the Laptop to get a usable sound.

I have had great success going from a cheap (less than $100) mixer into the mic in of my computer.

Are you sure that everything is set up correctly?
