I just got a set of Equator D5 monitors this week. Still breaking them in, but they sound pretty amazing. Also stepping up from basic computer speakers, have the AV30s and have been using ATH-M50s for the last several months. $300 the pair, 50 watts per side, coaxial tweeters (apparently this is a big deal). I don;t see any need for a sub for what I am doing (roots rock) but if you do EDM or similar I could see maybe wanting one. They get great reviews, and so far, they seem to live up to the hype.

I'd go with a used set of Mackie MR8's. I'd use something else (i.e. a boom box) to check the midrange though.

The D5s seem to be getting all the buzz.

I used to have a home studio before my house fire and went through many monitors. The Mackie HR824's were my favorite with the best quality out of the Events and KRK's I used. I paid $450 used for both. They had some dings on them but it didn't effect the quality of sound they produce. I'm currently rebuilding my studio piece by piece and as of now I'm using 2 Mackie SRM150's as monitors until I can afford the 824's agagin. Not exactly studio monitors but these things KICK MAJOR BUT and sounds superb. But if you're doing any mixing then I'd use headphones or regular house speaker since your the majority of people listen to music either thru headphones, car speakers or a little shelf stereo system speakers. I used Yamaha NS10's for the mix down.
Try Guitar Center's used section of their website. You'll find great deals on used monitors and will probably find the ones you listed in there. In fact I know I just some a couple of 824 and 624's going for some good prices on there. Hope this helped as with everyone elses advice.

I've got a set of D5's too, very impressive. Since I was already used to having a sub I'm keeping it, but most could work fine without one. I'd take these over HR824's and NS10's any day. I don't like the NS10 voicing, the Mackie's are good but I cringe at the use of a passive resonator, seems a rather un-neutral thing to do, and the D5 price makes it a pretty easy decision.

I bought a set of M-Audio Studiophile AV 40's in red from MF just before Christmas. They were $80 then, $119 now, and I like them! I have them connected to my PC Laptop, Xbox-360 and TV and they sound great. I couldn't pass them up for the money.
