Interface Recommendations

Hello all,

I currently have a Boss-BR 1600 CD (digital stand alone unit) which can record 8 tracks at a time. I then send the live takes (drums, bass, guitar) individually to a computer which runs Sonar X1 Producer software for editing.

I also want to have the ability to record tracks (overdubs, vox etc.) straight onto Sonar.

My question lies in which type of interface I should get? I only need 1 input at a time, USB. I am currently looking at the cheaper M-Audio units, but it seems like they all come with a version of Pro Tool installed, which I don't need.

Will these units work with Sonar? Are there any other units that I should be looking at?

Thanks guys, I've tried to search, but its so confusing - maybe I'm not searching using the right terms.

This seems like it should work. It does not run MIDI though, just records what is played through the device onto the comp.

I've got the Lexicon Lambda, which I've been using for a few years now to record vocals over pre-recorded tracks. I've never had a problem with it. I haven't used Sonar, though, only Adobe Audition.

I chose the Lambda because of its phantom power capabilities and good reviews. I think I paid about $60 on eBay, lightly used.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Most interfaces will come with some form of a DAW just don't use it. I use a presonus firestudio project which I think came with Cubase but I use sonar too.

Once you install the driver for the device you can use it with any DAW.

Presonus makes some decent single input interfaces too which are pretty cheap. I really like the firestudio.

If you are going for really high end recordings you will probably want a stand alone pre amp. I used the built in interface preamps for a long time and can't believe how much of a difference it makes.

If it's just for a hobby the built in preamps are good enough.

+1. I read everything on that site about five times before I jumped into buying gear.

Just bought a "Focusrite Saffire 6 USB Audio Interface Featuring Two Focusrite Pre-Amplifiers". I plan on using it with Logic Studio 9.1.3. as I was lucky to sell a couple of things and get a new macbookpro.

Anyone care to comment on the quality of this interface and setup? I'm probably going to use it for jamming and practicing with amplitube 50% of the time and the other 50% for recording ideas or just keeping tab of my playing....
