Isolating bass tracks from 2-channel mixes

Hey all, I hope this is the right forum to post this question. Please don't flame the newbie.

Obviously, it's impossible to isolate a track from a stereo mix. Tweaking EQ, etc, has been my method of learning bass lines by ear. Just turning up the bass, down the treble either on my stereo or in Winamp. There's a tempo plugin for Winamp but it doesn't work very well. I was wondering if there is such a thing as the ultimate software that would assist one in learning songs. Load the audio file, have some low pass filters maybe to "boost" the bass so that it's more distinct, then have some additional capabilities like looping for learning those difficult passages. I just found out about the Tascam Bass Trainer but haven't read any reviews or know anyone that has tried it. Just seems like someone would have written some software by now to make the song learning process more efficient.
