Laptop suggestions?

So I usually work with a 4-track (bought at least 10 years ago) that I would record and mix with. Later, I would sort of dump that into Adobe Audition to get some solid files. These were demos and worked for the purpose. Now I'm upgrading to a current 8-track (dp-008) and also have some money to get a laptop. I like the portability of recording with the 8-track without having to risk harming my laptop (travel, shows, and the like). So I'm wondering what a suitable laptop would be for some recording uses (editing mainly) for under $800. Or some characteristics of a laptop I should look for.
I understand I could ditch the 8-track and invest more in the computer, but this configuration feels better to me. Thanks!

I know this will probably start a heap of debate, but from someone who has used both, go for a mac.

Why a laptop?
You get a lot of horsepower and flexibility for the size and cost for A Mac Mini or a small PC

Here's something mentioned on this board earlier
Apple Complete Mac mini Recording Studio 2011: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Just the software is worth it.

That looks pretty rad and I did look at the Mac mini (didn't see the full package though) but I'd be using it for other things as well like a couple of games every now and then and school work, with maybe a possibility of live instrumentation in the future. In the best of all possible worlds, I would get a Mac, but I actually misquoted myself and my price range is actually $650 and under. So yeah, thanks for the suggestions though.
