What the hell are you talking about?

"Layered" is a really ambiguous term. Perhaps it is some software specific jargon. What program are you using?

The only thing I can possibly think you are aking about is sub groups. This is the technique of either combing a group of duplicate tracks and processing them deferently from from the originals and then blending the two in the mix, in way you are "layering" the traks. Though the term layer makes me think of something linear, stuff being stacked.

Layering might mean:

You record a track, you then copy and paste that track into a new channel. You then can add Reverb + Chrous and mix it hard left.

You now have two channels/tracks that are different and will add bigger sound to the whole recording by layering them.

Just a thought. I do it and I think it adds to the whole mix.

i think to sum up and answer for the questions...

sequencing/host software such as cubase, sonar, protools, etc.
