Any input from Audacity users out there? | I use Audacity on my Mac for this purpose, it is easy to use, functions as a multi-track, allows for click tracks, easy to insert fades, silences and other basic effects.
Free.
Bass -> Effects -> Amp -> Headphone Out -> Computer
Cost me a total of $6 (and I probably got ripped off buying a cable at radio shack).
Edit:
Example of a recording made this way: here

I think it comes with some basic version of recording software too. I'll post more info when mine gets here.

Any input from Audacity users out there? | I use it and yes, it can record sometning that is playing on the PC. I use a little patch cord from RS to go from heaphone jack to line in jack. And then it can play one or more existing tracks back while you record more tracks. There is a very small delay that I really can't hear, but if you are a perfectionist you will need to delete the first few milliseconds from each track you record after the first.
If you can generate an MP3 drum track instead of recording it, you will improve the quality slightly and you can import it as your first track and then record additional tracks while playing it to keep time.
One thing Audacity does not do well at all on my system is play through where you want it to function as an amplifier by passing the input out to the speakers as it is recording.

The play through problem keeps me from being able to hear what I am playing while recording if I am jacked directly into the computer. Using the line out from my amp is another way to resolve that. I assume the latency is pretty negligible (?)

But if you are going to record copyrighted music, you will want to open a free band account at MySpace or SoundClick and upload the music for play only (no downloads) to avoid license issues.

Basically (pun intended), I'd like to record keys, gtr, bass, electronic or midi drums and vocals (overdubbed).
Thanks and sorry for the hijack!

You can use it as a stand alone application or in a host via Rewire or VST. It has the ability to play back an audio file from the computer hard drive so you can play along with it.
It also comes with Ableton Live Lite 5, which is a recording and mixing software.
Thanks,
Dan

The cable was $24 and works great. I am not sure if they make it anymore, I tried to find it on their site recently for a friend and it wasnt there. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
