I would say if you don't want to be constantly mucking with your computer I would use another Linux that is a production release.
That is simply not true. The Alpha that you saw is for the next version, 8.04 Hardy Heron, that is scheduled to released in April. Version 7.10, Gutsy Gibbons, is stable.

I'm actually recording three albums in Ardour on Debian unstable. Ardour is completely pro software, no doubt about it, and as of 2.4 supports pretty much everything Protools does. Combine that with things like Jamin for mastering and the umpteen quality LADSPA plugins for effects you just can't go wrong. It'd take me at least a couple of grand to get anywhere near the amount of software I have for free in Linux.

That said, it's a chore to get it up and running right, even after using Linux for 10 years. I thought I'd chime in about Ubuntu Studio 8.04, which just came out. It's really polished, highly recommended. Just install and you have a world class recording studio for free.

Personally, I find Ardour highly confusing, it's been a while since I've come across a program without a separate "options" menu. What Linux recording program would you say is more like Cubase? I like Ubuntu Studio, though, it lets me use my midi keyboard out of the box.

Edit, hmmm, the Ardour version that came with the copy of Studio 8.04 I downloaded seems to be 2.3, weird.

Is there a .deb of 2.4 somewhere? I can only imagine compiling from source being a pain in the butt with a program as complex as Ardour.

Never mind, I found one on softpedia.

It's coming, they just couldn't get it in to the repo, but it'll probably go to backports in the next couple of weeks. I'm going to try this guy's version of it later tonight, but use it at your own risk: https://launchpad.net/~spacepluk/+archive. Also, Ardour is meant to function a lot like protools which is why if you're familiar with Cubase it's a bit different. Also, a lot of the options functions that you would have in windows are handled by JACK instead of in the program itself. However, this is changing somewhat as of 2.4, as it gives you the option to start the JACK server from within Ardour vs using Qjackctl (still the recommended method, more options).
