I am thinking about getting Logic to build an affordable home studio...I've got a good room mic and a mixer. What else would I need? Is Logic a good choice?

Hey -- I got into Logic this summer as my first home-based platform.

I've worked on Pro Tools & MOTU in many professional studios over the years and was always interested in getting my own rig -- but until fairly recently things have seemed pretty darn pricey to get a full functioning home studio happening.

That said, I got a new MacBook, Logic Express 8, Oxygen keyboard, plus an Apogee Duet FW400 interface.

Logic is fairly intuitive -- plus it has a ton of stuff built in like ample keyboard & piano sounds, all kinds of audio loops, Ultrabeat (a sequencer drum machine), killer guitar amps & FX, etc., so I can do everything "inside the box".

The good news is -- there are a ton of affordable programs out there now to choose from and many seem to share similar features.

That said, I'm very happy I chose Logic. I recently upgraded to Express 9 and plan to upgrade to the full version sometime in 2010.

Also -- there are a bunch of great online video tutorials by a company called Groove 3. Since I bought my rig from Sweetwater, I got a free 30 day pass to Groove 3 and learned a bunch of skills that got me up and running fast. They also have tutorials for several of the other platforms too.

Good luck!

Logic is a great program. I tend to be more of an analog tape or protools guy these days, but I used logic for years and if I am mixing in the box (i.e. not on my console) I much prefer it to protools for that type of work... I just never mix away from a console these days, so logic doesn't get as much use... but I did use it for editing Ludacris and ODB's accapella's for the song 'Coochie' on Blakroc... there are certain editing functions that i prefer in logic sometimes.

All the DAW's these days are very similar in feature set, it just depends on what you want to do with the software. I would say that Logic and ProTools are the two most prevalent and are also the easiest for getting files into and out of (very important if you collaborate with others or if you want to go mix somewhere that runs PT...)

hope that helps.

I bought Logic 8 a few months ago. I'm loving it! At the Apple Store in London, UK they run a free workshop on how to get going with it. That was really useful.
