Looking for that certain sound...

I am currently looking to find a new amp. I have tried a couple of different heads/cabs so far (mainly ampeg and GK) but I can't really find that right sound. I am looking for something that has a strong punchy low end with a definite grind to it, and something that doesn't leave a hollow sound in the mids. If anyone has any suggestions as to gear I should try out, let me know.

I use Ampeg, the SVT-5, with the 810e. It'll blow pretty much anything out of the water, but it's been discontinued. GKs are awsome, Trace Eliotte kick too.

What kind of bass do you use? Pick ups? Pick/fingers??

It's all about the sum of the parts.

My favorite amp for that is a straight-up SVT stack. But since it weighs over 200 lbs, I've opted for an SWR SM-500 into an old Tube Works 4 x 10". I use a lot of different amps since I fly to a lot of my gigs and have to use whatever rented backline is there, and those have emerged as my two favorites.

I am currently playing an Ibanez SRX505. It puts on a nice hot signal. I also play with my fingers. Hope that helps.
