Sign in to disble this ad
ive got a normal family pc, it dell and i cant tell you much more than that!?

im looking to be able to start recording small parts, and demos of songs as ive started to write a lot more and its a pain using my hand held sony recorder as it just sounds awful!

im not taking studio quality but just something that i can lay down a few tracks say like 4 parts in a recording?

i know ill need some software, but what else do i need?

To get decent recordings, you need an audio recording interface device between your instrument and the computer. You could use the "line in" input with an adapter but it will not sound good.

Go to this site: Musicians Friend. You'll find tons of interface devices. You are going to have to do a little more research on your computer. I'm sure it has USB connections, however it would be a plus if it had Firewire.

A good simple free program for recording is Audacity.
For simple recordings, that is all you need. You can create additional tracks in Audacity and export your finished product to mp3.

Take your time and do some research, recording is fun, but you need to get everything working together.

Good luck!

Check out this site it has lots of info for beginners and config's based on budget. But if you plan to do more get ready to start learning a lot more about your computer than what brand it is especially if your going to be using Windows. There are driver and config issues you have to understand to configure the computer for your DAW software. If you don't want to do that then better off looking at one of the good hand held recorders like the Zoom H4n or similar device.

get this.

plug it into the mic input on the back of your computer, and plug you bass cable right into that. download audacity. if this is just for your own personal use so you can hear parts it will be more than sufficient. this is how i used to work out parts before i upgraded to a project studio

Lame is free (donationware actually). You can download it via the links on the Audacity page. Also check out www.box.net where you can get a free account with basic features, upload your samples and post the links here.

You install Lame in it's own directory, then go to Edit- Preferences-File Formats in Audacity and set where the Lame file library is. Restart Audacity and the now you should see "Export as MP3" under the file menu.

What I like about Box.net is that when you post a link, it takes the person right to file and gives them the option of downloading or just listening.

Hi Andy,

Here's my Lame file. Just unzip it into it's own directory and point Audacity to it.

Your link worked and I was able to download the file. The one I don't like about that site is those characters you have to type in first. I can't read them sometimes so this time around, it took me 3 tries. Try Box.net.

The file sounds good though
