Low-Budget Solo Project

Alright, first of all, I apologize to all the people reading this, because I did not look through all the threads on here, trying to find something similar to my situation. If there is something on here about it, please point me in that direction.

Now, onto my problem...

I'm trying to record an EP, for real no other reason than the fact that I think it would be cool to have one recorded. I have nothing to record with, or any knowledge of recording. The genre is death metal (off to a bad start already, I know). I have all the instruments I need, except drums, but I know a guy who can play so i'll just get him to deal with that. All I'm asking from you guys is advice about recording, and a good, all purpose mic I could get, or any other information you think I need to know.

Hey Dave,
I got a similar idea but tech/brutal death metal. Anyhoo I've done some research and found the AKG Perception 420 if I have to believe the description it's a 20Hz to 20k Hz mic, with a 120Hz HPF.
So you can use it for basicly everything but I recommend doing the drums with several mics.

AKG Peception 420

Drum mic kit
http://www.thomann.de/nl/the_tbone_d...ikrofonset.htm

Keep in mind the drum kit isn't the best of the best, but for low budget stuff why not. It works!
The AKG is something I've been wanting for a while but havent gotten round to getting one. So dont have any personal experience.
What recording program are you planning on using?

Keep me updated on yer project btw

Thanks, this was what I was looking for, but I probably won't be able to get any equipment or anything recorded for a while, by low budget I meant I'm broke for a while... oh, well. I still have alot about recording to read up on, considering I don't even know what recording program I'm gonna use.

You can get Adobe Audition for "free" on the internet *wink wink*
And just score something from jack to USB like http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...C=SO&U=strat15
which can be pretty inexpensive.
pump the bass/guitar tracks in Audition and you got yourself a base.
The drums can be controlled using midi on a midikeyboard for example.
For 20 pounds you got yourself a solo thing going on

I have bought a Protools LE kit for 270 euros or something for school and work related projects. (I'm an amateur sound engineer hehe)

For sound editing you can use Reaper (Poormans ProTools), it is freeware/shareware, not pirated (if that matters to you.) It is full featured and not crippled in anyway like most freeware/shareware demos; can check it out here:

http://www.reaper.fm/download.php

There is also Audacity (free) I could never get that to operate correctly on my system, but from what I've read I'm sure I am better off using Reaper.

I think you can still DL Guitar Rig 3 which has some decent emulations for bass and guitar. That demo isn't full featured afaik, but should still offer some functionality, and well, it's free.

Just do the best with what you can get.

For a mic on a tight budget, how about building your own? Build a studio quality +48v phantom powered Condenser Mic (for under $35!)

http://www.diycondensermics.com

There are also "cheap" manufactured mics for around $30 as well such as a Shure C606, can also get a USB Dynamic Mic, (standard type mic that plugs directly into USB port.)

And yeah, you do have a lot of reading to do; and after that even more times spent experimenting.

Enjoy.
