Low FI recording

hey everyone quick question

how would i record low-fi a la Jay Reatards, The Black Lips, White Stripes. basically Detroit Garage rock.

i know they use reel to reel, and there are some delay pedals which may emulate the sound also.

but i know nothing of the equipment, reel to reel players, or if it has to be done in a stereo.

It can be done however you want it. Sometimes you have to experiment and just catch that "magic" sound somehow. I've used everything from a boombox with two tape recorder condenser mics taped together to a 4-track cassette recorder and one Radio Shack mic in the middle of the room. I've even played audio through a VCR and recorded the sound with the mic in front of the TV speaker. That's the fun of it, playing around with junk and finding a way to make a useful recording out of it.
