Low ouput level in computer recording

Hi everyone. I make amateur recordings of myself on my computer, just for the purposes of hearing flaws in my technique so I know what to work on, and hearing how two (or more) passages sound together, etc

For information purposes: I use an adaptor to plug my bass directly into the computer 'input' jack designed for microphones. I record using a program called 'Cool Edit Pro', or, if I'm lazy, the 'sound recorder' that comes with Windows. Both have been successful in the past, with normal volume levels.

Lately, and quite out of the blue, the bass signal has gone waaaay down. I've tried all the input and output volumes, which are all fine. Neither recording program, as well as the playback that occurs when you play (even without any programs open) is nearly as loud as they used to be. To be sure, I played other songs on my computer, and even old recording I made, and they are all at reasonable levels. The volume on my bass is at 100% and the battery is new. Everything in volume control is fairly high. I'm doing everything I had done in the past (to my knowledge) but for some reason it's just not nearly as loud, hardly audible in fact.

What's going on?

This is a noob question I'm sure ...

Have you downloaded any new applications or media players? I had a program I installed that reset *all* my audio settings to suit itself .....

To my knowledge nothing that should have needed to reset volume levels.

But I guess that should be part of my question: apart from volume control (which has a whole bunch of ouput and input volumes, all of which I turned up to no avail) is there anything else that affects input and output volume? (apart from, obviously, the input device, like my bass, and the output devise, like my computer speakers)
