M-Audio Firewire 410 has LEAD!!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
I got my M-Audio Firewire 410 today and it has this sticker with it:

Anybody else have one and have you run into any problems with the lead? Call me paranoid or crazy, but I'm thinking of returning it due to health concerns and getting a different interface.

If I were to return it, what interface would you recommend around the same price ($300).

This probably means on of the ICs inside the box has lead in it and/or lead leads. I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, it says Wash Hands After Handling, so that's what gets me.

I think that is just the stock message. Sort of like the "This record may contain" with a huge list of things.

DON'T EAT IT.

And if you do, wash your hands after, of course.

This has to do with solder having lead in it. If that is the reason for you returning it you'll have to get rid of most of your gear.

It's just the solder, then why does it say "Wash hands after handling"?

Because they are trying to get all electronics manufactures to go RoHS compliant. Making them put a scary notice on equipment is a good way to do that.

My midi keyboard had a manual saying the same thing, just figured it was the solder as well.

It's for the same reason you can read "WARNING: May contain traces of peanuts and nuts" on certain ant traps.

In case you tend to open stuff and lick their insides.

Don't eat it or smoke it! Integrated circuts contain a lot of very nasty stuff. Lead may be the least of it.

By the way, the fish we all eat is loaded with mercury. Not that makes anyone feel better. You gotta die of something, just don't make the cause of death worrying about this stuff.

Now go make music!!

You can thanks the safety nazi idiots in California for that warning. You have nothing to worry about, unless you plan to eat it.

Unless you plan to live in a bubble for the rest of your life, you will encounter some lead. Deal with it.

Alright guys, thanks. Will play with the box after work and record some stuff for you guys. Any tips on hooking up and using? I'm going bass->pedalboard->amp->Mic->Interface->Mac or PC.

I have a Presonus Firepod and I have been licking the insides especially to solder joints. There was no warning unless it was on the bottom. Am I screwed? How long do I have?

All the food we eat (junk and healthy) throughout our lives is probably more dangerous than that tiny bit of lead! Think of all the chemicals that go it to making food stay fresher for longer! Talk about paranoid......

I was about to make a bad joke about the fact that lead guitarists are bad for your health.
