M-Audio JamLab - good for GarageBand?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi -

I like recording and practicing with GarageBand on my MacBook but am getting tired of the delay that often pops in when I plug my bass into the computer's audio input. Will a USB device solve the problem? If so, if M-Audio JamLab a good choice, or should I get something else?

Thanks!

I plug directly into my PowerBook using a Griffin guitar cable and record in GarageBand and have no issues with latency (delays). Im not sure how new your computer is or how much ram you have in it, but I would search on latency issues to see if you can solve it without having to buy other products.

maybe spend a bit more since the jam lab is the bottom of the barrel but that should solve the problem.

I have the same Griffin Cable and I'm using an Intel Macbook with 2 GHZ RAM, and a 1 GB 667 MHz processor.

Usually, i don't have much of a problem if GarageBand is the only application open, although even then for reasons I don't understand I often have to open it twice to avoid noticeable latency. The problem becomes unavoidable typically when I have some other applications open - like I'm taking a study break from MS Word and want to learn a tune off of iTunes or YouTube without quitting everything.

Got it. But what does going higher up the barrel get me other than multiple inputs?

I don't believe you can record with JamLab

Actually your computer is newer than mine and with more RAM (I have an older G4, 1 GB RAM) and like I said, I never have any issues, even with several other programs open (big ones like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator). I have recorded my bass, guitar, and a new MIDI keyboard/drum machine and its been spot on each time.

Maybe there are some settings in the control panel you can look at or search, if you havent already, to see if others had the same issue.
