I'm new to recording and I'm intending on using the garageband program on mac. I've been looking at the M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface and the MXL 990/MXL 991 Recording Microphone Package . A buddy of mine uses the M-Audio, but I'm pretty clueless as to what it does. If anyone could explain, that would be great. I'm also not sure how well the mics would record my upright. I'd be using them for electric/upright bass, guitar, and vocals. Does anyone have any input on these mics or suggestions on other mics for my cause? Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance.

The M-Audio is a soundcard/audio interface. it gets sound in and out of your computer, with more options, flexibility and with a better sound (with less background interference etc) than the on board soundcard. It also allows you to record 2 separate things at the same time. bigger inetrfaces allow you to record many things at once, thats how you record a drum kit, for example, and effect everything separately later.

For the money you can't go wrong with those mics. A large diaphragm condensor (like the 990) is the standard sort for recording upright bass. The other one will be nice as a fill in mic near your fingers or similar.
