Used in what setting? Studio? Live? The M5 is a mic pre and the U5 is a DI.....

It's more economical, and it still sounds excellent for bass.

Looks like the M5 can accept an instrument signal too although it's a mic pre. I owned a U5 and it kicked a$$ for bass both for recording and as the pre in my rig. Wish I still had it sometimes.....
