So I built a Mac. The cost for the barebones system was slightly under $400 before tax/shipping (this doesn't include keyboard, mouse, monitor). The basic specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz CPU
2GB DDR2 667 RAM
250GB 7200 RPM SATA HD
SATA DVD Burner w/Lightscribe
The only hurdle was making a molex-SATA power adapter because the power supply I got only had 1 SATA power connector (oops). I didn't add firewire ports as of yet (tack on another $20 for a TI card) because this Mac is for my gf who doesn't need it. Mac OS installed cleanly, but I've seen people having problems particularly if they're using older hardware.
I haven't really done much with it yet but it seems to be running smoothly. I must say it was kind of exciting going through the install process, I felt like I was flipping off Bill Gates and Steve Jobs at the same time!
