Making Ableton Live recognize the Ampeg SVX VST plugin - RESOLVED!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have had great luck with Ableton Live for the past year. Works well, easy to set-up and use, interface is fairly intuitive. I have had no issues with VST's in Abelton until I got the Ampeg SVX package last week. SVX installed normally, I can use it stand alone (the B15 model is great!), but I can't get it to load as a VST plug in. I can see the SVX.dll file in the folder with the rest of my VST plugins, but it just will not show up as selectable option in Ableton.

I was so looking forward to setting up a template with the B15 model as my default bass tone.

any ideas ?

p.s. I will ask on the Ableton forum as well, but thought I'd ask here too.

I use Ableton Live. Their forum is like a ghost town. You'll get a faster response here. I seem to remember there was a thread on this not too long actually. Did you do a search? I only remember because I'm very interested in this. I record with my Ampeg Svp-bsp, but elements of it are getting too noisy for recording.

yep, posted in the Ableton forum, and so far, no reply. Although I do see action over there on some posts/questions.

I did not search the TB forum for an answer to this question, but I'm going to now. I'll let you know if I discover anything.

This is a tough one, because all the other VST's I have just appeared in Ableton once installed, so I do not have any idea on how to troubleshoot this problem.

I really would really like to have the Focus B15 model from the SVX package available to use in Ableton recordings.

Have you tried rescanning for plugins in the preferences window?

yes, about a 100 times, and rebooted, and uninstalled/reinstalled SVX

turns out the answer is to run Live in Administrator mode (in Vista and Win7 anyway), then you do the VST rescan process, and there it is! I use computers all the time and should have thought of this before. But there you go!

For those who don't know, to run as Admin, you just right click the Live icon and choose Run As administrator. This allows any program more rights over system settings and resources and such - and apparently lets VTS plugins be recognized .

MakiSS while I got no action on my post in the Ableton Forum, I got a very quick reply from support@ableton.com on this question.

On Edit Also discovered that with this method of installing/recognizing VST's, you always have to run Live in Admin mode. If you don't, Live will throw an error if you try to use the SVX VST. It's not huge issue, but it threw me off for a second.

Thanks for the tip about the support link. I'm running a Mac, so I'm not sure if this problem is going to apply if I pick this up.

I believe that Mac OS is Linux based, and there are certainly permissions in Linux, so it may be that this will apply to you and your Mac too.
