Markbass for recording

Hello folks,

I was wondering if it would be OK to record from the DI of my Markbass head direct to the board without having a speaker cab connected?

Many thanks.

i was about to ask this same exact question in my session tonight!

i believe that solid state heads can run without a load on them, but tube amps cant. i think that was the consensus on the subject while back.

Yes, my thoughts were the same. In this case, it's a solid state SA 450 head.

I just don't want to go and do something dumb.

Can I use my Markbass amp without connecting to a speaker cabinet?

Yes, any Markbass amp can be used as a preamp only. We recommend that when doing so, you turn off the master volume (not essential, but its better for the amp). The gain control will alone regulate the output from the amp.

direct from the markbass site. last place i looked lol!

forgot to mention-

the only reason you'd want to plug in your cab is to mic the cab up.

i find that i get the best results by using the DI straight to my interface AND micing up my cab, thats way i get the clarity of a direct DI but a great thud from my mic'ed up cab, to me it sounds more natural than just using a DI.

but thats just the sound i like, people should always experiment to find what they like.

I agree 100%. Two sources are often better than one. In my particular case, I wanted to do something quick, so knowing I can run right from the amp without needing the speakers is great news.

I would edit that. Solid State are safe, but I would think twice about using tubes without at least a dummy load.
