Matching transformer and bass level

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there really much difference between a "TRUE DI box" and a Hi-z phone to Low-z balanced matching transformer?

I plug my bass into the transformer and feed my Mackie mixer and really cant tell the difference between it and a REAL DI besides the fact it doesn't have a separate output for the amp in.

I was just wondering

Thanks

Not as much differance as you might expect for a $100, but...

To connect a Hi-Z instrument output to a Lo-Z input you need to to convert the signal. A hi/lo transformer works pretty well, but it does, in theory, "load" the instrument signal at certain frequencies. Can you hear it? Maybe - maybe not. An 'active/powered' DI does/should not load the instrument signal and technically provides better frequency response. Also should provide better noise rejection than a transformer. That said, for the money, a LO/HI-Z transformer DI works very well for live performances. Doesn't give me warm fuzzies in the studio.

Just my opinion - your milage may vary

Thanks wilsonNC I believe in what you say. I did forget about loading and effect on Freq response.
