Doesn't the FW410 have 2 mic pres already? Not sure I understand what you're trying to ask.

short answer: no, you don't need a preamp

longer answer: you really do want a preamp, because a decent preamp will sound sooo much better than the ones in the 410. but you're good to go without one for now.

Dumb question: how does adding the other mic pre work? Does it plug in to the pres that are in the unit? If that's the case, then aren't you STILL going through the subpar pres?

If you have a pre with a S/PDIF out, you can bypass the A/D and pres of the 410 by using it's S/PDIF in (for 2 tracks). If the pres in the 410 are related to those in the m-audio DMP-3, they aren't all that bad for budget pres. I've definitely heard much worse.

Ah, yeah, I don't have a digital unit, I was talking about an analog mixer, as in, a Behringer Eurorack...Which i don't recommend.
