Mic preamps for studio use

Sign in to disble this ad
I used to have an Avalon U5 that was perfect for running line-level direct to the recorder or interface, without relying on the second-rate preamps I occasionally run into in the studios in town. I no longer have the U5 (for various reasons), but I now use an Aguilar DB900 tube/xfmr DI. For certain apps, this is perfect (I have a high-end RME interface for home use), but now I'm at the mercy of whatever the studio has. Sometimes it's not good, so I'm looking for something I can run my DB900 through to get line-level output.

I would seriously consider the Summit Audio TD-100 for my bass-related needs, but I also want the ability to run a mic for home studio use. I'm not opposed to a mic pre with a DI input, though I'd likely keep using my DB900. I'm mostly concerned with "bass tones", but I'd use this pre on acoustic and electric guitars, drums, vocals, mandolin, whatever else I can get my hands on...

If money were no object, I'd have something like an API or A-Designs Pacifica, or Avalon M5, Millenia, etc. But alas, money IS an object. So what's out there that would pair well with my DB900 (and Radial J48), give me the gain I need WITHOUT noise, make the bass smooth and fat and sit in the mix perfectly well, and not break the bank? I already have an ART Pro MPA, and while it's ok, it's noisy, with weird distortion/artifacts even at low levels.

Perhaps something from Seventh Circle is a good option? Going that route, I could afford a couple different flavors.

Seventh Circle is an awesome option if you need like 6 channels of preamps. They sound great. If you are only looking for one or two channels by the time you buy the modules, rack and power supply it's not especially cheap.

Maybe the RNP? Pretty cheap, for sure tons better than the ART. I used to own the Pro MPA and would call your description pretty charitable.

I've used an LA610 with good results. I'm not sure of your budget, but have a look at it.

I use my Presonus bluetube DP, works good for instruments and vocals for me.
I just recently had a chance to use the presonus ADL 600, man, that one's even better.....but they're like $2k right now

I've seen UA LA610's, as well as Avalon 737's and U5's show up on the used market periodically for surprisingly little money. Keep your eyes peeled.

If all you're going to use it for is bass, be on the lookout for a REDDI as well.

did you try the presonus mic preamp?
It's not bad for quality price - range.
Cheers. Enrico
