I got a new laptop a while back, and have noticed a problem that has prevented me from recording as much as I'd like. I have a USB preamp, but it needs to be hooked to my microphone or line in. That's cool, but in my volume control, I am unable to monitor my microphone in.
With my old computer, and every computer I've previously recorded on, I've been able to turn up my microphone (In Playback, not recording) and actually hear what I was recording through my speakers/headphones. With my new computer, that isn't an option. Does that mean it's not possible with my new soundcard, or that my volume control doesn't have that option.
Hopefully I've made it clear as to what the hell I'm talking about. Any ideas?

Use the line in.

Lets say you've got just a regular voice chat microphone that you'd plug into your microphone in. If you went into volume control and turned the volume up on your microphone in, you could talk in the mic, and it would be amplifed through your speakers. I can't do that. There is no line in or microphone in volume control, at least in the output side of things.
So, if I wanted to record direct through the line in, I can, but I can't hear what I'm playing while I'm playing it.

Still not there, all that is available in the "show the following volume controls" is Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth and CD player. No mic or line in. But, you know what I'm going for.
