I am attempting to set up a small recording/editing/practice rig at home. So far, I have an M Audio Duo preamp, a Dell D-800 laptop and a variety of software, E Logic, Band in a box, various others. I'm using a small PA for monitoring (Mackie 408 and C300 speakers). The software recommends different midi compatible sound cards, but is that a problem with a laptop? Is there an outboard solution to get good sounds, besides an expensive workstation? Is there a software solution? Thanks for any suggestions.

You can get what are called "softsynths"...programs that run entirely on the computer, both standalone synths and "studios" like Reason that include multiple synths as well as a mixer and FX all in one program. There are many FREE ones out there in addition to commercial offerings.

You can get MIDI interfaces that connect via USB if you want to hook up external MIDI gear.

This is a pretty cheap and simple usb interface:

I got a quite similar one (one more output), for about the same price, and it's been working just excellent. If this one is as similar as it looks, then all you'd have to do is the following:
-Plug it in, and you're all set and ready to go.
