MIDI from HD-1 out to Logic than Drumagog as a channel setting?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm currently recording scratch tracks onto my Macbook Pro using Logic Pro 8. I'm using a Roland HD-1 set of V-Drums to build the scratch drums. I know they're scratch tracks, but I really dislike how they sound.

My initial thought was that I could send the MIDI out from the HD-1 brain into Logic, then apply Drumagog to the channel where the MIDI information is stored. The MIDI notes would then hopefully trigger the Drumagog samples accordingly?

Will this work, or is Drumagog just for replacing wave data for recorded drums? If it won't work; Is there a software package that will do what I'm asking?

Thanks!

There are loads of drum soft-synths. That's what you want to use. In your DAW, set up an instrument track with the softsynth. Set input to MIDI channel(s), arm, record, and go.

Hello,

Yes, you can use multiple instances of Drumagog to replace the HD-1, since Drumagog is designed to replace one sound at a time.

Hey Jack, thanks for chiming in. I've downloaded the trial version, but unfortunately my new MIDI interface hasn't arrived yet. The HD-1 doesn't really have a suitable output for wave data. All it has is the headphone out jack, which does work into my DAW, but all you get is a mono wave of all the drums rather than individual outs for each drum. Using the MIDI out gives you individual notes for each drum. I'll give this a shot once my MIDI interface arrives.

Send the MIDI through your interface into your DAW and then use a program like XLN Audio's Addictive Drums to create studio quality drum tracks. For most edrum kits Addictive has pre-made midi maps that will route the proper notes from my your kit to the correct pieces of the kit. I use it with my TD6v -> Presonus Firebox -> Macbook Pro -> Garageband. Sounds great and was really easy for me to get set up.

Check out their website for the details, but it's basically three top notch drum kits studio sampled along with a great group of cymbals. There are plenty of existing preset kits available for download so you don't need to start from scratch to get a decent sounding kit (unless you want to).

There are tons of others programs available like Superior Drummer 2 but through my research I felt that Addictive with the best choice for me.

Well, I grabbed demo versions of Drumagog and Addictive Drums. For the life of me, I can't get Drumagog to do what I want.

Addictive Drums on the other hand was VERY easy to get up and running using a simple $20 MIDI to USB interface from my Roland HD-1's MIDI out to my MacBook Pro's USB input. It even had a preset that mapped everything perfectly in one click.

Ultimately it seems to work very well. I don't need a ton of drum samples as most of what I do is basically modern pop music (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, bass guitar, drums and vocals) so the limited number of kits in Addictive Drums isn't a hindrance for me and might very well be a good thing, haha. As such I've talked myself out of checking out BFD. Last on the list for me was Toontrack EZDrummer, but I've not heard anything that was super convincing coming from their products so I'm not going to bother.

Thanks to Lexicon for pointing me in their (XLN Audio) direction. This is working out exactly how I'd hoped. Cheers!
