midi sustain solutions?

Sign in to disble this ad
i have a midi keyboard controller without an input for a sustain pedal. i want to record some piano tracks. i realize i can go in to my piano midi track later an manually edit the sustain function, but what i really want to do i just record the piano part as an audio track, so that means ill have to perform it as i want it to sound with no editing later. the sound module i have has 2 midi inputs. can one be used for a pedal? if so , where can i get such a pedal with a midi connector rather than a 1/4 inch? and, how do i set up my sound module to use the pedal?

You can take just any midi controller with a foot pedal input and merge it.
Most daws can do this.
Midiox is also handy for doing midi merge type functions.

If you're looking for a hardware solution you can try here:
http://www.midisolutions.com/products.htm

I think the cakewalk midi to USB adapters have switches for merging midi also.

im not exactly sure what you're talking about... but my midi controller doesnt have a foot pedal input, thats my problem.
would this product work? i could plug my midi keyborad controller and a foot pedal into it and merge them, and then send the output to a sound module.

What's wrong with using a 1/4" sustain pedal? It's like an $8 piece of kit. Any MIDI pedal is going to have a microcontroller, switches and power draw. Don't think I've ever seen one for $8...

i dont think you guys are understanding my question, or maybe im not understanding your answers.

i have a midi keyboard controller. there are no sounds in the keyboard. its just a controller. there are also no places to plug in a sustain pedal. it has no inputs for a sustain pedal at all. the only thing it does have is a midi out. i run the midi out into a rack mount midi sound module. there are 2 midi ins, one midi out and audio outs. i want to use the keyboard and sound module to create an audio track, not a midi track, on my DAW. which means ill be using the audio out on my sound module, not the midi out. where can i hook up a sustain pedal in that chain? all the sustain pedals i see online have a 1/4 inch jack. there is nowhere for me to use this type of pedal in my current system. it seems like that piece of hardware i linked above may help, but if there is another solution id love to hear it

Which controller and module are you using?

I know what you're asking, and I'd have to do some research. I need to know what we're dealing with in order to start.

its older stuff. the controller is literally just a controller, nothing else. piano keys and an on off switch and a midi out, nothing else. the sound module is an old one. a kawai Gmega. i just want to use it to create some piano audio tracks. if i understand it right, that box i linked above can like the input from a sustain pedal and the keyboard, merge them and then send them to the sound module, no?

Yes the Midi Solutions Footswitch Controller WILL work for you.

You will need an on/off pedal. Something like this:

Plug the 1/4" into the Midi Solutions Footswitch Controller. Then connect the Midi Solutions Footswitch Controller to your sound module with a MIDI cable.

If your controller is really old, it probably does NOT transmit "MIDI velocity". In other words, there will be no dynamics sent from the keyboard if you play the keys hard or soft - it'll all be the same, which really does not work for piano playing..

You might be better served getting something like this, that transmits velocity and you can connect a sustain pedal directly:

M-Audio Keystation 61 New about $200, used a lot less.

My bad - I misread your post. Thought it said WITH sustain input.
