Anyone here use Miroslav Philharmonik or a comparable "orchestra in a box" program for creating/recording? What are your experiences, pros? cons?

I've a got a couple of miroslav bits and peices.

I run it through the exs sampler in logic.

When ever i need "real" orchestral peices it's definitely the goto peice..

So all in all it's good...

Miroslav Philharmonik is pretty good. Though the quality of the samples will get you only so far, a lot of it is just about good arranging. Anyway, definitely worth the money!

This is something I made using Miroslav Philharmonik entirely:

(fades at the end due to a two minute limit of the contest I entered it in: the full song is much longer)

YOWSAH!!!!! I like!

Very beautiful writing and I DO like the sounds, at least as ensemble. How are the individual instruments? Bass Clarinet in particular is of great interest to me.

As for individual sounds, they're okay. The solo oboe is phenominal! A lot of people prefer its oboe over other more expensive sound libraries. In total the solo woodwinds are good, but the solo strings are just okay. If you want a really nice solo violin, get Garritan's Stradivari Solo Violin.

geoffkhan - very nice writing on that original piece. Would love to hear more - let me know where I could hear more of your work! The Miroslav samples are pretty impressive, I'm going to have to check that out. It's really the way you programmed them that sounds good, but they still sound pretty high quality.

Thanks!! I'll probably post future works in the 'recordings' section of this forum.

I have a lot of respect for Miroslav Vitous, for not only being an awesome bassist, but for making such a killer sample library. It may not have all the velocity layers and release samples as the other orchestral libraries out there, but he had a way of recording that gives a lot of life to the samples. Miroslav Philharmonik is definitely a very emotion-filled library.

"I recorded music. The rest of the companies recorded sounds. 'Give me G.' I said, 'Give me G like Beethoven or Wagner.' I recorded music. They recorded notes." - Miroslav Vitous
