Mixer to computer?

Sign in to disble this ad
A bunch of my buddies got their hands on a huge behringer mixer. The only problem is it doesn't have a USB on it and we'd like to plug it into a computer some how. So we can use a pro-tools or other recording program to aid us. Would a XLR to USB cable work? Thanks.

I think it should work if the levels are correct.

How about going out from mixer's master or tape out into the 1/8" mic input on your PC?

it's not just a simple cable...
XLR = analog audio signal
USB = computer interface.

There are cables with embedded analog-to-digital converters... you would need one for every channel you want inputted to the PC... and they need to be recognized by the recording software as audio inputs.

I use an M-Audio Delta series PCI card that does 4 in and 4 out to interface with my mixer. You can chain them together for more in/outs. They also make a 10 channel version.

I think i'm starting to understand. Mixer > M-Audio delta > Computer? Assuming the M-Audio delta has a USB on it? or some kind of jack that would work? And with the one you named i can use up to four channels at any given time?

thats what i do, tho I only use it for playing through my computer, not for recording or anything like that.

This M-Audio Delta link shows the Delta 1010 and includes a gif on the right that shows how to hook it up between your mixer and computer.

Nevermind, James Hart's idea is the better one for your needs.

Any Firewire or USB audio interface with two or more inputs (XLR would be nice) will work. I have an M-Audio Firewire 410 and it works great.

Just in case the OP missed it, XLR is audio and USB is data. Firewire is also data. It does absolutely nothing to send an audio signal into a data input. There has to be a device in there that converts the audio into data.

Motu Might Be Worth A Look

I use a Motu 828Mkii front-ended from my Mackie board and it works like you might expect it to.......meaning, there are not technical boundaries that get in your way and you can have multiple concurrent channels recording and playing back all with high definition resolution rates ( it does what you ask of it).

If you go firewire, it's just about guaranteed that you will have a fine performing, low latency interface. If you go USB, make sure it is not USB 1.1. You want to only be looking at USB 2.0, and even with that, make sure the vendor has decent drivers for DX and ASIO, or whatever other protocol your DAW system needs.

Best of luck,
V

I recommend getting a firewire interface, like the Presonus Firebox. From all the feed back I've heard and personal experience, FW gives you a cleaner signal, free of weird artifacts which seem to pop up on even the best USB interfaces.
