Don't know how much they are in the US, but I got a pair of used KRK PR6's over here for not too much.

Yamaha HS50M. Those will give you a nice sound, but not enough bass. I don't think a speaker with a cone smaller than 8 inches would satisfy a bass player.

I'd disagree with that, got some proper thump on the go with my 6 inch KRKs

I use Alesis Monitor 1 MKII near field monitors in my home studio. They can be had for as little as $200, and are an incredible value.
