Motu 828 mk1 upgrade?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a motu 828 mk1 and it was great years ago. since getting a new macbook pro im curious about what else i should look into. i want to run abelton live 7 while recording my band and probably be using something like reason software along with the abelton.

what hardware should i look at under $500 that i could record multiple instruments in a live setting while using the same computer for running software synths?

don't know if I'd call it an "upgrade" but the M-Audio 1814 has loads of IO and looks good for field recording... http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Firewire1814/

another good one is the Presonus FP10, comes with 8 pre's which would be useful for recording your band. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FP10

OR the Presonus FireStudio Project: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FireStuProj/

All of those look great. I'd probably lean more toward either the motu or the presonus if i did.

Here's my dilema. I know eventually i will get abelton and reason but i only have around $500 to work with. Since i have the older motu 828, do i keep that and get the abelton software, or upgrade the recording device first and work with garageband or whatever software comes with the new recording device?

I'd suggest the Presonus FP10 (used to be called the Firepod). It's right about at your price point, has better sounding A/D converters than the MOTU gear, and has eight channels of mic preamps instead of the two the 828 comes with.

Although the FP10 is a nice unit. I must disagree that it has better converters than the MOTU stuff. Better than the original MOTU unit perhaps, but the new stuff......

sorry to sound like a broken record, but do you think its time to upgrade to a motu ultralie/fp10 and work with garageband until i get abelton or should i just keep my old 828 and upgrade to abelton?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I still use my 828 mk1 almost every day.
