My audio toolkit

Tell me which are the sotware that you consider "VITAL" for your music related pc.

I'm particulary interested in "not so demanding programs (example: I'd rather use a Sx version of cubase and not the latest one) because:
1. I'm a newbie in this sector
2. I'm going to purchase a "under 500$" laptop that I'm going to use ONLY for music so its system/hardware specificaitions will not be so "high standard"

(I know I'll have to buy a audio card..)

p.s. First tuch: metronome, tuner, recording software, vst plugins, ...

any suggestions ? .

with a laptop that cheap your gonna have a hard time running any sort of plugin. Id look into outboard gear if i were you. Figure out the 5 plugins that you will use most and look at those attributes in some outboard gear. IF you do decide to go an all software route I would have the following:

Recording program: getting the older one wont do you any favors, odds are steinberg will stop supporting it, go with the newer version

Drum machine: this can be outboard or software based but i prefer the software ones, like reason or fruity loops

Plugins: the best/cheapest ones ive been able to find are the cycling 74 ones, check them out
