Need help on buying dig. recorder

Hi,
I am a beginner bass player and getting a lot out of the forums here. My son , now in college, has been playing guitar for 8 years and is quite dedicated. He asked for a 8 track recorder for Christmas. I have done a lot of searching on the internet and have two units in mind. They are the DP-01 and the Zoom mrs8..both priced at $300. I think he mainly wants to record his own stuff and perhaps some music with his buddies. The Zoom unit has a builtin drum machine that to me would make recording his stuff much easier. It does not apear as the DP-01 has any drum machine. Again, I am a beginner and this is all new to me. I sure would like some asggestions as to which wat to go and is the drum machine really important.

I own the MRS-8 and love it. I can definitely recommend it! It has a built in Rhythm Machine (Drum & Bass), so that would be handy for a guitarist (I turn teh Bass portion off on mine, but have listened to it and it is useful). The internal effects while not great, are also quite useful. The internal condensor Mic is excellent for recording practices, lessons, jams, rehersals, etc... I use mine almost every single day.

Have Fun!
