notation software

Hi,

Maybe my question is a bit off topic, but I'm interested in musicnotation software for writing my solobass compositions. I've tried the demo version of Finale guitar 2003, but I miss some important writing symbols like harmonics and deaden notes.
Does anyone know if there's other notation software which offers the complete tool of writingsymbols?

I'm not familiar with Finale Guitar 2003, but I do know that Finale 2001, 2002 allow for notating harmonics and ghost notes.

I've got Finale PrintMusic - I haven't yet figured out a good way to do ghost notes and haven't needed to transcribe harmonics so far... but for my current needs (reminders for personal use) I've found it sufficient and didn't think it was worth paying a lot more to get a few extra extra features I might occasionally use.

In Finale 2001 and subsequent versions you notate ghost notes and harmonics by altering the note heads.

I'm sure Finale 2001 can do what you want. The big problem with Finale is that it is sooo user unfriendly. The learning curve is high and if you don't use it everyday it is impossible to remember the commands. (at least for me anyway). But, it will do just about anything you can think of.

True - but Finale 2003 is several orders of magnitude better than the earlier versions in terms of its usability and GUI.

I'd heard that from a few sources. I guess the Sebelius thing made them get off their butts and clean up some of the poor programming the older versions had. Is the [ HELP ] function any better? In my version (2000) it seems to take forever to find anything. No matter where you go, you're in the wrong place. I even went so far as to print the whole thing out ( over 2000 pages ) it took up 2 of those huge 3 ring binders. They are so heavy and cumbersome that I end up using trial and error more than just looking something up.

I have found Finale's help to be quite adequate. The navigation and search tools are pretty good. The help utility uses embedded links - it's quite easy to use and it's a darned sight quicker than leafing through 2000+ pages...
