Online collaboration? Anyone know a good site?

Curious if anyone knows a site where home studio musicians attempt to find collaborators to record other parts for their tunes? I remember hearing a radio program about these types of sites a while ago but I didn't catch the addresses.

Depends what you actually want to do, but ive done some research and its a difficult process. My bigggest stumbling block has been the size of the files. IF your just zipping waves back and forth no problems. Im colloborating with a guy about 4 hours away. We cannot find a way to send pro tools files back and forth. They are usually between a gig and a few gigs and there isnt much that will let you transfer files that large. Alot of companies say they will but when it comes down to it taking over 10 hours to transfer 5 gigs is not acceptable. The best way to do this, if you have pro tools, is to get thier digideilvery system. Its $10 grand. We actually mail hard drives back and forth, which is risky. Im looking forward to the 16 gig flash drives to come down in price, then I will use that. Again, like I said, if you just need a wave file sent back and forth its not too hard.

Technologically I'm sure I could find a way to transfer the files, I have a very fast internet connect (FiOS) and if dealing with really massive files then mailing DVD's is a decent option. Would just like to know a good place to meet up with other people interested in doing this

Basically (no pun intended...? Ahem...?) the best thing to do is find a server where you can post and download files via ftp. If you have a website for your own page you more than likely already have a ftp account. You could then upload and download zip or better yet rar files (rar is a better compression method and files are usualy smaller) this way. You will just need to see what your ISP size limits are for total storage and/or transfer.

Otherwise you can find a server/service that will allow you to store data on their servers for a small monthly price.

FTP in general is a faster method for loading and downloading files.

Kompoz.com.

I am a member under the same screen name. Also there is netmusicmakers.com and there are perhaps a dozen more in various types and focuses. Do a Google search for music collaboration sites. I strongly endorse Kompoz though as it is as good a place as any I have yet to try.

You can upload a variety of file types although I think most are using either .wav or MP3 with sync tracks. I understand they will be doing aff files soon, if not already.

Why not just burn data DVD's and mail them. If bigger than a single DVD then use a backup program and backup your project folder. Burn the backup to DVD's and mail. Then the other end can restore from the DVD's. The backup program will handle spliting large files over multiple DVD's. Easier than sending hard drives and you end up with DVD backups you can go back to any point in the project if necessay.

Find a musician that you like on myspace/soundclick.com that doesn't have bass on his or her songs and offer to add some. I never seem to like the music most people post on collaboration sites.

Here's two sites I've done Online Collab's on in the past. A lot of excellent musicians at both sites. I haven't done anything at either recently, but that's due to being very involved in doing a lot of recording locally with friends at the moment. I'll be back once I'm done with that though. heh heh...

Good luck and have fun!

http://musicollaborate.com/ is one I signed up to, but never used.

I've been doing this kind of thing for a couple of years now in my online tribute band - www.virtualqueenproject.com - I'm in the UK, in the Midlands, the singer lives down south, the guitarist in Washington DC and the pianist we used is in Madrid. What we've been doing is sending individual wav files to one another via www.yousendit.com with one person taking responsibilty for the mix and it's worked well, with each song improving along the way (I'm not so keen on my first mix any more, but I'm still a beginner when it comes to mixing really).
