PCI Emu 0404 - low output?

For some reason, I have to crank my speakers up half way to get a decent volume out of this thing, way further than my old sound card. I checked the Patchmix DSP as well as the windows mixer and they seem to indicate the WAV outputs being all the way maxed out.. Any ideas?

First thing to check is the hardware settings for your interface - for me, this is in the ASIO driver control panel most of the time. It may default to -10 or Consumer, when you want it at +4.

Second, check cables and all that jazz. Might just be a cold solder joint somewhere.

I don't think that is it. I have the output boosted up +12dB (the max) in the control panel, and it is still much quieter than my other card.

On top of that, the sound seems weird. The test wav's that come with windows sound quite digitally and harsh. Is this just the transparency of the 0404 vs the enhanced sound of a sound blaster card?

well, i think the harsh sound was distortion from having the gain up so high. if i set it back to 0db, it sounds very nice, just super quiet..
