which portable digital recorder?

Sign in to disble this ad
anyone have suggestions on a good portable digi recorder? i currently use a sony md with a condenser mic. it works and sounds good except i can't "rip" music onto my computer. i have to record real-time onto my computer and the md skips sometimes. also, i have to deal with a bunch of minidiscs. i'd rather have something with built in memory and could upload quickly onto my computer. it will be used mainly to record jams and practices.

I don't own it, but one of the guitarists in my band uses an Edirol R1 to record all of our jam/rehearsals. Pretty good quality if your careful about mic placement. It uses compact flash cards for storage, and I believe when you hook it up via USB2 it mounts on the desktop like a hard drive, so moving files is drag and drop.

I'm using an M-audio microtrack now. Used to use a Zoom PS-04.

Here's a previous thread with some discussion:

I haven't used it for recording a jam yet, but I've got one of these for where I work (Marantz PMD670). Used for recording interviews etc., then dump to a computer via USB. It's pretty good, but not cheap. I used to have MD recorders, but they're delicate and kept coming back broken. This records to flash cards, so there's fewer moving parts and less to go wrong.
