Is it possible to multitrack with Audacity?

I'm just curious because I'm teaching a class in which I required everyone to download the program to record their assignments on, and it would be neat if I could give them multitrack assignments. I use Digital Performer at home, but can't quite figure out if Audacity is capable of overdubbing. I can certainly record two tracks that will play at the same time, but I don't seem to be able to monitor the first track while recording the second.

All help appreciated. If it's not possible, that's cool - it would just be very convenient if it was.

Yes, it's possible. Go to Edit>Preferences. Under the Audio I/O tab, there is a check box for "Play other tracks when recording new one"

That's how it's done.

I use audactiy quite extensively for podcasting.

Thumbs up

Thanks, man - you just made my day! Do you experience any latency issues when multitracking this way?
